18世纪的英国哲学家伯克提出了崇高sublime的概念,这是一种带有痛感的愉悦,是对引起心理痛苦的可怖事物的回应,可以拯救我们摆脱生活的琐碎,体会生命的实感。在伯克的时代,人们会在自然界找寻壮阔的山与海来体验“崇高”,而当人类已将旗帜插遍地球的每一个角落,又亲手创造了无法穷尽的虚拟世界,我们正面临着“灵魂如同一叶小舟,被遗弃在浩瀚无际的欲望之海上”的窘境。也许能切实引发我们感到崇高的东西,只有未知的深邃宇宙,以及摆脱了世俗社会规训的疯癫Madness。
此次展览邀请了20余位跨越了不同年龄段的中国艺术家,对当代艺术中“太空艺术”这个子主题进行回应,在不限制具体表达的情况下,尽可能去拓展“太空艺术”这个新门类的边界。艺术家们借助区块链、游戏引擎、人工智能、增强现实等技术手段和媒介带来了一个梦幻癫狂的虚拟艺术剧场。人类依靠互联网创造出了前所未有的思想孤岛,严丝合缝的数字全景敞视监狱加速了社会理性坠入醉境,如果需要什么来对抗这个世界的荒诞,那么创作是唯一的路径。塞万提斯把艺术创造归类为发狂的想象,这是一种浪漫化的疯颠。美术馆和艺术收藏都是以我们有限的生命来感受文明的不朽,那么把宇宙作为永恒的崇高,将赋予卑微渺小的人类战胜一切痛苦险境的勇敢背景。
我们把载着人类艺术作品飞往太空的卫星当作驶向未知海洋的船只,这个游离在常规架构外的异化物就带有了酒神精神Dionysisch Geist的隐喻。是时候制造一种集体放逐,启航去往人类开辟的电子世界,还有我们并不熟悉的太空,在未知中探索存在的可能性。尼采在《快乐的科学》中呼喊:“生活在险境中!在维苏威火山旁建筑城市,把船只驶向未知的海洋!”在时间的长河里和宏大的宇宙背景下,人类的生命就像蜉蝣一样短暂而不值一提。不要问一颗卫星在太空中可以存活多久,更不要问元宇宙在百年后是否还存在,在悲剧中覆灭是对人类生命意志的肯定。应当举杯庆祝,我们让生命的悲歌响彻宇宙!
It was the 19th-century British philosopher Edmund Burke who expounded the modern concept of sublime: an inherent pleasure bonded with terror and pain, a response towards the mentally distressing unfathomable horrors. Sublime could also elevate us from the mundaneness of life, further retrospecting the human condition. As in Burke’s era, we tend to seek the presence of sublime in mountains and oceans. Yet, since humanity has already marked every corner of the earth, thus even creating the ever-expanding virtual realm, such natural wonders are no longer sites of awe. We are currently facing the predicament in which our ‘soul as a skiff, abandoned on the infinite sea of desires.’ Perhaps, the last presence that causes our sublime sensation is only the unknown universe and the ‘madness’ beyond the social discipline.
This exhibition invites more than 20 Chinese artists encompassing different age groups in response to "space art," the brand-new sub-category of contemporary art, broadening the boundaries of "space art" without restrictions on expression forms. As a result, these artists have jointly constructed a dreamlike, kaleidoscopic virtual theatre through harnessing blockchain, game engines, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and other technical means and media. In a time when the dependence on the internet is dividing our spirituality into a constellation of segregated isles, the emergence of new digital 'panopticons' is accelerating the reason towards intoxication...If there is anything to counter the ever-expanding absurdness of the world, then creation will be the only path. Cervantes once considered artistic creation as delirious imagination; it is a form of madness by romantic identification. Since museums and collections are already examples of our uncontrollable desires for perpetuation, then let us take the universe as an eternal sublime, thus granting us - the humble and insignificant mortals, the brave background to overcome all pain and danger!
We regard this artwork-carrying satellite as a ship venturing towards an unknown sea; this conventional-framework-departed, alienated subject carries the exact analogy of Dionysisch Geist. It is the time to create a collective exile, plotting a new course to the digital realm we once created, as well as the distant stars, exploring the possibility of existence in the great unknown. As once Nietzsche exclaimed in his The Gay Science: ’To live dangerously! Build your cities on the slopes of Vesuvius! Send your ships into uncharted seas!’ In the endless flow of time and the abysmal scale of the universe, humanity may seem ephemeral like mayflies. Yet, ask not how long a satellite could endure in the freezing void, as well ask not whether metaverse still exists in hundred years; the destruction in tragedy is anything but an affirmation of the will of human. We ought to toast, as we let the elegy of life ring through the cosmos!
